Using a Platform Ladder: Safe Working Procedure
Follow this procedure for the safe use of platform ladders:
- Ensure you are wearing appropriate non-slip footwear. Remove any extraneous clothing items that may snag, such as a scarf. Empty your pockets of unneeded items.
- Stand up the ladder with all feet on a flat, level, secure surface.
- Ensure the legs are folded out fully, and the cross braces are locked in place.
- Visually inspect the ladder to ensure all treads are in good condition and clear from obstruction.
- Have a second person “foot” the ladder from the opposite side you climb. There should be someone footing the ladder at all times when you are climbing or standing on the platform.
- Climb the ladder. Climb slowly, facing the ladder, always maintaining at least three points of contact (one hand and two feet, or two hands and one feet). Climb fully into the platform.
- When working from a ladder, keep both feet on the platform at all times. Do not overreach or climb on the cage.
- Once work is complete, descend slowly, facing the ladder and keeping three points of contact.
- Do not leave any items on the platform.
- Safely store the ladder in the tunnel once work is complete.
If you feel begin to feel uncomfortable when up a ladder, make immediate efforts to steady yourself (hold on to the handrails and look at a stationary object) and descend as soon as it is safe to do so.
Never use a ladder when working alone.
