5. Respect

Working in the Hayman Theatre creates a sometimes challenging dynamic, in which students take roles of “authority” over other students, with these roles often shifting between productions. It can be difficult to navigate this dynamic in a friend or peer relationship. You may find the following tips helpful:

  • Respect your role and the role of others. Senior roles such as director, stage manager or designer require students to designate work to others. This is not “being bossy.”
  • Attempt to speak to all team members in a manner which is respectful, patient and polite.
  • Even in stressful situations, remember your manners and use “please” and “thank you.”
  • Listen to people’s concerns and try to find a solution that works for everyone.
  • Although your role may provide you with crew at your disposal, only ask them to do relevant tasks. For example, sending them on coffee runs is not relevant. Crew are not personal assistants.
  • If you require certain conditions as part of your pre-show “ritual,” politely inform your team ahead of time. They can’t be expected to know your particular requirements without being told.
