For more info on this Camera Click Here.
This Guide allows you to understand the use of the Shure FP-33 Mixer and its Electronic Field Production (EFP) audio mixing capability.
For a Video on this unit, -
As the Mixer Output is connected back to the camera or 'tethered' with an XLR cable, we are using the audio capabilities of the camera to record the sound. Hence there is no requirement for a Clapperboard, as the audio will always be in sync with the pictures.
To connect the audio mixer to the camera plug your second cable from the Right side of the Mixer (Output side of Mixer)
- Use the longest cable as it lets you move away from the camera, and closer to the source of sound.
- Connect the cable to the mixer OUTPUT connector to the Mixer, (as shown to picture Left).
- Select LINE on the mixer MIC-LINE switch.
- Still with this cable, plug it into the Camera LINE1 Input
In addition, connect the provided headphones to the mixer, these provide the best quality for monitoring sound.
Setting up the mixer
( Leave the camera operator to do their setup while you check the mixer)
- Switch on the Power.
- Set the MASTER level dial to “0” you can calibrate it exactly later.
- The Mixer is a 3 channel mixer, (take note which Input you plugged the XLR cable into, 1,2 or 3). Turn up the MIC level for that channel to around 7.
- Turn up the Headphone volume (Inner control knob) to around the half way. You should be able to hear the microphone working, and set the headphones to a suitable listening volume.
- Use the headphones for quality sound monitoring.
- Select L+R for headphone monitoring.
- Speak into the microphone in a normal voice and set the MIC level so your voice peaks at 0VU on the meter. Set the levels for average loudness spoken word and listen carefully to check the sound quality.
- Check the microphone and boom pole for rattles and handling noise, wrap the microphone cable around the boom pole so it won’t rattle or tangle.
- Check the cable from the mixer is plugged into Input 1 of the camera, (as shown in Picture Left).
- Check mixer output and camera input are both set to LINE level.
- Set-up and test the sound system with the camera operator, each confirm the setup.
- Listen for quality sound in the camera and check the volume of the camera through its headphones.
- On the 'Status Page' of camera within its viewfinder. Check the mixer and the camera mic are recording on separate channels.
- Test the mixer battery with the battery test button and meter display, new batteries should last about 10 hours
- Next we will calibrate the camera and mixer with a test tone signal camera level settings
Calibrating the Mixer
- Turn down the microphone level,
- Switch on the 1Khz Tone switch.
- Adjust the MASTER level to display exactly 0 VU on the meter.
- Check the long cable from the mixer LINE OUT to the camera INPUT 1 (CH-1)
- Check the audio switch for Input 1 on the camera, is selected to LINE.
- Adjust the AUDIO LEVEL dial on the camera side to calibrate the level to -18 on the display. See below
- Do Not adjust the MASTER level at all from this point on.
INPUT 1 is set to LINE. as shown far left in picture
INPUT 2 is set to Mic+48V as shown far left
CH-2 can be set to record “atmos” from the attached camera mic.
Set the INT / EXT switch to EXT, this refers to External Input and adjust the AUDIO LEVEL as required.
Channel 3 and 4 will record from the built in microphones on the camera.
On the Canon XF605 camera: Press the Status button and scroll (Up or Down) to view the audio meter in the viewfinder, as shown to the left.
Setting the Tone Level
For convenience we can consider “the 1 Bar to the Left of -10 as a guide to ‘Set’ the correct audio level of -12dB as shown by the arrow.
In the bottom picture also note that the Status display indicates under the Source heading that Input 1 is set to LINE, while Input 2 is set to Mic +48v. This is correct
Test record the 1khz tone with the cameras Colour Bars for 30 seconds and play it back to check sound quality. Listen with the headphones on the camera.
