Sony FX30 - Slog Filming

The Sony FX30 utilises LOG shooting in its more advanced modes. LOG is generally found on cameras that support 10-bit bit depth or higher. LOG curves flatten the contrast and colour saturation to allow for colour grading in post production. Sony’s equivalent of LOG is known as S-LOG and it comes in two versions, S-LOG3 and S-LOG3.Cine. Both are similar in nature however S-LOG3 has a slightly more flat image, creating a more difficult however more versatile colour grade. To ensure that S-Log is setup correctly, please first ensure that the FX30’s resolution and codec is set correctly, then follow the below steps:

Ensure that Log Shooting is set to Flexibile ISO.

Ensure that Color Gamut is set to either S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3 or S-Gamut3/S-Log 3*

This is personal preference, you are welcome to use either, please refer to top paragraph in blue for more information on the differences between the two.

Your image will now have a flat look to it on the viewfinder. If your viewfinder still looks very colourful and “realistic” in terms of colour and contrast, please head here to turn off the camera’s internal LUT.

If you would like to know how to put a LUT on your external monitor, please head to the Shinobi 5 field monitor guide here.
