Workstation 5: Teleprompter

The Role

The role of the Teleprompter is to provide the written script as a visual aid to the Host or Presenter, by allowing the words to be shown to the On Camera person, without impeding the camera shot being recorded.

To 'Load' the script into the Teleprompter, launch the QPro software on the Windows PC in the Control Room.

Once it has launched and is shown - as in the picture, use Ctrl +A to Copy the script intended for your Production, from Word or Notepad.

Then 'Click' in the Black area of the picture and use Ctrl+V to Paste.

The best Font Size for the script to be shown on the Teleprompter screen for the Presenter, is around 4 words per line.

To Edit your now loaded script, use Ctrl+A again, then navigate to Format within the Menu Bar and Click on that to Open. From there select Font, Best Font is Calibri and Size Font around 110.

Your text from Windows Notepad

Your text with Font size now added and with some adjustments to ensure that its punctuated the way required with the Spaces and full stops and commas, where they need to be.

Then with the text suitable for the Presenter, we then add some hi-lighted words that are used in the production as 'Action prompts'.

From these Action prompts, the Studio Control personnel can see from the Autocue screen on the Multiview display the next upcoming event within the Production after each part of the script has been read by the Presenter.

For the example shown, it shows that the first item or 'element' within the Production is the Opening Titles. It runs 1 min 35 secs, once that has been played, the next element required to go to is CAM1, (Camera 1).

These 2 functions are performed by the Vision Switcher operator but prompted by the 'Directors Assistant' who then informs the Director the sequence of events needed.

Once CAM1 is put to 'Line' or Program, the Audio Operator raises the audio fader for the Presenter's mic to activate and the Presenter begins to talk the sentence shown " The quick brown fox jumps over the Lazy dog..............

The script is scrolled by the Autocue operator to allow the Presenter to read the script at their normal 'Read speed'. The Autocue operator matches this speed by turning the speed control at the end of the device shown.

This Unit is plugged into the USB Header on the Autocue Desk and setup to function within the software QPro.

Once script is prepared and Production about to begin, 'Click' on the Prompt icon (circled in Red) to show the prepared Autocue script below in the teleprompter for the Presenter

The script now being displayed through the attached camera monitor on the Camera.

This will now leave the icon as displayed left in the bottom right Toolbar of the VDU.

Launch the AutoCue program and before commencing the Prompter View, Right Click on the NDI icon in the Toolbar and Left Click on the word Desktop. This will now leave a symbol 'tick' beside it to indicate that Desktop is selected.

Start the Prompter view, this will now have the Desktop view appear via the Tricaster as an NDI signal.
