Filming off Campus

Consultation with the councils Film Liaison Officer is recommended as early as possible. To apply for permission to film in the area, an ‘Application to Film’ form may need to be submitted. Costs can usually be negotiated as a student film.

When to get permission

Permission to film within the council is required when there will be;

  • Public land use (like parks)

  • Local government land use (like recreational centres).

  • Public, business and/or community disruption.

  • Anticipated use of a site that is contrary to existing regulations.

  • Traffic management issues.

  • Emergency services requirements.

When information you will need to provide

When you call the council you may need to be prepared to give them the following information.

  • WHEN you are planning to film - even if date’s are estimated - there may be another event booked at the location you want to film at).

    • Dates and times for intended film activity, including duration.

  • WHAT you are making - a STUDENT short film, documentary, music video etc.

  • WHAT equipment you are planning to use beyond a tripod eg. gimbals/drones/dolly’s

  • HOW many people will be involved. Include actors in this number.

  • WHERE you want to film - be prepared with a google maps reference or at the very least an address.

  • Confirmation that you are required to complete a risk assesment within the school that can be provided and that you have public liabilty.

  • Any other relevant details including a short description of what you are filming.

Filming

A Filming and Drone Application is required when you have a filming/photography group of five or more (including cast and crew).

When submitting your application with the City, please include the following information:

  • A filming schedule with work site layout

  • A Pedestrian and/or Traffic Management Plan (when filming impacts City footpaths or road reserves). Refer to the Traffic and Pedestrian Management heading above.

  • A Certificate of Currency for Public Liability Insurance, for a minimum sum of $10 million.
