We have curated a series of how-to videos for commonly forgotten things when working in the studio. These videos are simply a go to guide if you need a refresher on any of these printmaking basics. Make sure you have been inducted and signed off properly by one of the technicians.

Beveling (filing) The Edge Of A Steel Etching Plate

A quick video to show you how to bevel the edge of a plate ready for printing. Please note the correct way to hold the file & the use of cut resistant gloves while performing the task.

Setting The Press

A guide on how to properly set the etching press for use with steel etching plates, drypoint plates and monoprint plates.

REMEMBER: When setting the press always make sure you do it slowly and in increments on each side so the mechanism is not damaged

Setting The Press With Runners

A continuation of the first “Setting the Press Video”, for using the press for printing woodblock and lino prints, aswell as any plates higher than etching or drypoint plates. The roller of the press needs to be set to the specific height of the plate you are using or you can damage the press, your plate and you will not have successful prints.

Monoprint Ink & Application

In this video we go over how to mix & apply ink to a plate for monoprinting. An in depth look at what materials and tools you need and the correct way to apply ink for creating a monoprint.

Cleaning up Ink and Tools

A demonstration of how to correctly clean up oil based inks and the tools and equipment used. Please make sure to allow enough time to clean up your area when working in the studio. It is a shared space and you will use communal tools. Please be mindful and respectful and clean up as best you can!

Mixing Ink

In this video we demonstrate the correct way for mixing inks. We instruct on what tools to use and the correct quantities of each medium. Be mindful when mixing inks to use a clean spatula for each different colour so as not to mix in the wrong colours into the tins.
