To add photos, start by adding the pics to the WI media library. Go to Media/Library on the main menu. Then click on Add New. Size matters! As a general rule the photos should be no more than 400kb and no wider than 1920 pixels. You may need to resize and/or crop before you upload. Wordpress automatically creates 3 versions of every photo added: medium, large and thumbnail. Note: not every photo will work as a thumbnail as it is a specific shape
To add a photo into the post. Click on the spot where you want to add the pic and then on Add Media.
Click on the relevant photo and check the alignment and size on the right hand panel. Click on Insert into Post. You will need to use the Preview function to see how the photo will look on the page. You may need to experiment to find the best way to use your pictures. To add a photo for the home page thumbnail go to Featured Image on the right hand side of the post and click on Set Featured Image. Check the photo will work in that spot. If you have photos in the post you MUST also set a featured pic.
Homepage feature slider pic: If you have a very good photo that may be considered to go on the slider on the home page please crop it to 1114x350 pixels in Photoshop before uploading. Copyright free images: You may need to add copyright free images to illustrate your story (most often to provide a thumbnail for the home page). There are a number of sites to choose from including: Pixabay and Wikimedia. Check restrictions/conditions on all photos.
Ensure all photos have captions and photo bylines. Our style is Photo: Student X. Headlines: Keep them short(ish) and snappy. Look at news day examples on the site. Consider how they will look when being read on a mobile device. Excerpts: Should not repeat what is in the headlines. Try not to repeat main words in headline and excerpt. The excerpt is not the same as the lead but there can be some overlap. It doesn’t have to tell the whole story. It’s a taster to draw readers into the post.
Before you finish your story make sure you write a headline and an excerpt (the excerpt box is towards the bottom of the post page). Assign a category to your story by ticking the relevant category. Do not click on the Feature category, even if you are writing a feature. You should also ‘preview’ your story by clicking on the PREVIEW to see how it will look on the site. Please save your story regularly by clicking on SAVE DRAFT. NEVER click on the blue PUBLISH button. |
