Smoke machine - Martin Magnum 650

Isolation of the fire detection system is necessary during the use of smoke, fog or haze generators. Ensure the correct procedure is adhered to in order to maintain adequate fire detection safety and avoid a “false alarm.”

Use of smoke machines must be authorised by the Hayman Theatre Production Coordinator and be strictly as instructed.

Once isolation has been carried out, follow this procedure for the safe and correct use of the Martin Magnum 650 smoke machine:

1. Conduct a visual inspection of the machine, ensuring the test tag is current and there is no damage to the plug, cable, or housing.
2. Position the machine on a flat, stable surface with adequate ventilation, away from flammable materials or moisture. Never point it directly at people or electrical equipment.
3. Ensure the fluid level is adequate. Only use approved smoke fluid.
4. Plug in the machine to power. Do not run it through a dimmer.
5. Turn on the machine. The on/off switch on the unit, and the light on the remote control, will illuminate. The machine will take about five minutes to heat up. When it is ready to use, the light on the remote control will switch off.
6. To output smoke, press and hold the switch on the remote control.
7. For tests or rehearsal, use the smallest amount of smoke required and increase the output gradually. For performances, operate the machine only as rehearsed.
8. During operation, the light on the remote may come on. This indicates the machine is reheating. Reheating takes approximately two minutes and the machine will not output smoke during this time.
9. After use, switch the machine off using the on/off switch on the back of the unit. Let the machine cool for ten minutes before moving or touching it. During this time the machine may emit small puffs of smoke.
10. Once the machine is fully cooled, return it to storage. After extended operation, the nozzle may remain hot for a long period of time, and contact should be avoided.
