PrP - Basic Editing - Performing a Basic Edit



Navigate with J-K-L Keys

Press the J Key to play backwards, K to stop and L to play forward.

Pressing J or L multiple times increases the playback speed.

You can also use the SPACE BAR to Play and Pause.

PLAYING THE CLIP

To perform a basic edit, choose the clip you want to edit into your sequence in the Project panel, double click on it to open it in the Source Monitor.

Play through using J-K-L keys.

SETTING THE 'IN' POINT

Find the IN point, the point where you want the clip to start, and set it using the I key.

Keep playing through using J-K-L keys (and the left and right arrow keys for frame-by-frame accuracy).

SETTING THE 'OUT' POINT

Find the OUT point, the point where you want the clip to end, and set it using the O key.

SELECTING THE DESTINATION TRACK


Select the video and/or audio track(s) on the timeline you want the media to go to (by default V1 Source/left will go to V1 Destination/right, same goes with the audio, ie. A1 to A1, etc.).

Click the Source patch button on the left side of the timeline to set the destination track .

This will tell the Source panel which tracks to put the video and/or audio onto when you edit it into the timeline.

INSERT/OVERWRITE CLIP

Then

EITHER

tap the Comma (,) key on the keyboard to perform an INSERT edit

Insert Edit

When you edit a clip into your sequence using an Insert edit, your source clip will be inserted at the point of the playhead, and all clips will be pushed forward in your edited sequence by the duration of the source clip.

Or, in the lower Right of the Source Monitor, click the INSERT Button.



ALTERNATIVELY

tap the Fullstop (.) key to perform an OVERWRITE edit.

Overwrite Edit

When you edit a clip into your sequence using an overwrite edit, your source clip will be written in at the point of the playhead, and any portions of clips that are already in the destination tracks are replaced by the source clip.

 

Or, in the lower Right of the Source Monitor, click the OVERWRITE Button

ALTERNATIVELY

Having set your IN and OUT points on your clip, drag & drop it to the Timeline, next to your previous shot.

When dragging a clip to the Timeline a the Default Option is OVERWRITE edit (indicate by the 'Down Arrow' icon). To change to an INSERT edit, hold down the Command Key (icon changes to a Left Arrow).

Open the next clip in the Source Monitor, set your IN and OUT points, activate the Timeline, move the playhead to the place you want to put the new clip in your Sequence (play/pause with space bar or use J-K-L combination or the up and down arrow keys to jump to edit point) and edit the next clip in using one of the methods above.

Continue this process until you have completed your rough cut.
