Procedures and Protocols - School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry

As a Curtin MCASI student, you are required to familiarise yourself with this document.

PRODUCTION PROCEDURES AND PROTOCOLS

Studying Screen Production at Curtin means that you will have access to the tools you need to build your creative and practical skills, preparing for a career in the film and TV industry.

Much of your development will focus on how to use the equipment and the facilities to express your ideas creatively, but you will also develop a professional approach to whatever you undertake.

That is why the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry (MCASI) actively pursues an industry-related, professional approach to its operations, which are embedded in these production procedures and protocols. These operational guidelines cover how you can access equipment and facilities; how you should use them to get the most out of them for your productions, how to care for them, and how to ensure that your fellow students enjoy the same access to them that you do.

These are similar, and in many cases identical, to procedures for accessing and using equipment in the production industry, whether you find yourself working in a studio, a production house, or hiring equipment or facilities as a freelancer, so by following them during your time studying at Curtin, you will be taking a huge step in your growth as a media professional. In addition, the procedures cover aspects of production such as health and safety requirements, legal requirements relating to copyright and the clearance of properties and performances used in productions, as well as recording and assigning your own rights in relation to the works you create during your studies at Curtin, and again, these are critically important aspects of professional media production.

These procedures and protocols have been organized into two sections: the first, titled Unit Procedures and Protocols, details those procedures and protocols that apply to all years, and the second, titled Unit Procedures and Protocols, details those procedures and protocols that are specific to different years because of particular equipment, facilities, resources or unit content.

This also contains information on how to operate various items and carry out necessary functions, such as how to import media into the MCASI Isilon edit server. This section is presented in a ‘unit’ progression, so you can easily find the ones that apply to your unit.

Many of the forms are common for all years and have been collected in the Essential Forms section. There is also an Appendix section with additional information on MCASI Borrowing Procedures and Policies, how to Work with Video on Location and a credit sequence template.

Some of these procedures will also be incorporated into unit outlines, but unless otherwise specified, these procedures apply to all use of Film, Television and Screen Arts’ equipment and facilities, and you should, therefore, make yourself familiar with them, as ignorance of them will not be accepted as an excuse for failure to adhere to them. Failure to comply with the procedures may result in you being denied access to equipment or facilities, and this can impact on your ability to successfully complete units and the course.
